Designed by Cesar Pelli and located in the heart of Columbus' architectural and historic district, The Commons has been a very important part of this community since opening in 1973. It is on the second floor of this glass-enclosed space where the Columbus Museum of Art & Design is located.

The Commons is the established performance center for hundred of activities and events each year. For a complete list of events scheduled visit the Columbus Area Arts Council.

While visiting The Commons you will see Chaos I a 30' kinetic sculpture created by Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely (1925-1991). This unique piece sits next to a highly popular indoor playground, which is surrounded by a fun and friendly Food Court.

Also located in the heart of historic downtown Columbus is ARTColumbus. ARTColumbus aims to expose, enrich, enlighten and encourage individuals and groups in the visual arts. ARTColumbus serves as a community art center composed of artists, students and patrons

Columbus has earned worldwide recognition for its modern architecture. In 1991, the American Institute of Architects surveyed 829 of its members. They ranked Columbus sixth among U.S. cities in architectural quality and innovation. Only Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Boston were ranked higher in the survey.

While at the Visitors Center located on the corner of 5th & Franklin, you will be enchanted with the Yellow Neon Chandelier and Persian Window by world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly.

The Visitors Center's gift shop is stocked with unique items, including architectural books, pottery and jewelry, a selection of fine glass pieces, and much more. Also extraordinary for a community of Columbus' size, is the existence of an internationally acclaimed Philharmonic. The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic is dedicated to presenting and teaching a balance of the best orchestral, choral, and chamber repertoire from all periods and styles, including all genres of American music, and music of our time.

Another accomplishment by which Columbus, Indiana is also set apart, is to have been selected in 2004 as one of the Ten Most Playful Towns in America, by Nick Jr. Magazine. When it comes to our children, Columbus Indiana takes playtime very seriously. Proof of it is kidscommons Children's Museum, Columbus' very own community children's museum. This state of the art facility is a clear example of Columbus' dedication to our future, best personified by the quality of life enjoyed we provide our children.
